In accordance with the NBU Strategy until 2025 and the SEP development roadmap, and taking into account Ukraine's EU candidate status, the NBU has converted to a new generation of the NBU's System of Electronic Payments (SEP 4.0) based on the international standard ISO 20022.
 
As of 1 April 2023, interbank payments are transacted in the new generation of SEP 4.0 24/7.
 
The software and infrastructure of SEP 4.0 were developed by the National Bank of Ukraine.
 
Transition to the new SEP 4.0 generation is an important technological condition of quality development of the Ukrainian payment infrastructure. In particular, this will expand functions of SEP and harmonize its operation with the EU rules and provide for:

• implementing instant transfers in the next version of SEP 4.1 for customer payments in Ukraine in real time. Testing of SEP 4.1 version by participants is scheduled for 2023. Instant transfers functions will allow customers to significantly speed up processing of payment orders in electronic form with immediate crediting of funds to the recipient's account and inform the recipient of the crediting, which will ensure instant transfer of funds from the payer to the recipient

• the foundation for Ukraine's further accession to the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) in order to transact cross-border transfers in euros with EU countries through SEPA Instant Credit Transfer

• executing multi-currency transactions, implementing the tracking service for payments, and other tools.
